On Monday morning the Mothers and Toddlers group at St Stephen's called to say they had no heating or lighting. The electrician's investigations showed that the fault lay with the connection to the grid. Very quickly a hydro engineer was on the scene to diagnose the problem.
Soon there were three or four vehicles and half a dozen workmen on the scene. They also supplied an emergency generator, so that the Brownies Christmas party could go ahead ('Will the generator run the heating as well as the lighting?', I asked the man in charge, to which he answered, 'It would run the street!'). The hydro guys set up diversions and dug up the road, and worked through the night to restore the power, which is now back on again. We like to criticise the utilities and public services when they get it wrong. But this Christmas, give thanks for things- like electricity- which we take for granted, and for all the unsung heroes- like engineers and tradesmen- who help us when the things we take for granted go wrong!
